It’s that time of year again. After all of your hard work, you are putting the finishing touches on final papers and preparing to walk across the stage at graduation. But before you start celebrating, take a few steps to make sure you are ready for what’s next, which for many of you will be entering the workforce.
- Make sure you have an up-to-date resume prepared. If you have yet to create one, now is the time. Be sure you indicate that you are a graduate and list any honors you may have graduated with, as well as any experience you may have gained through internships. It is appropriate to remove anything associated with high school from your resume at this time.
- Take steps to establish yourself as a professional. This includes setting up a professional sounding email address and voice mail message and making all of your social media accounts private.
- If you aren’t a user on LinkedIn, create an account.
- Reach out to your network of family and friends and let them know that you have graduated and are looking for work.
- Start sending your resume and customized cover letter to the targeted companies you would like to work for.
- Have a go-to interview outfit on hand so you can be ready for an interview at a moment’s notice.
- Consider registering with an agency that specializes in the area of work you are interested in.
Remember that searching for the right job is work in itself. It takes time and dedication, but when you find the position that will start your career path, all of your efforts will pay off.
